Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Physician Jobs & Recruitment
This is the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation hub I send candidates and clients to when they want my honest read on the specialty — what's actually moving in offers, which contract clauses are worth fighting over, and what has changed since the last time you looked at the market.
What the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation market looks like from my desk
PM&R demand is driven by inpatient rehabilitation facility (IRF) growth, post-acute SNF medical-leadership expansion, and outpatient sports/spine and pain practice growth. My typical PM&R search is hospital-employed for an IRF medical-director-track or staff role, or outpatient interventional spine/sports for a physiatrist with fluoroscopy procedural training. Pediatric rehabilitation and brain-injury fellowship-trained physiatrists are recruited separately and command meaningful premiums.
What Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation compensation actually looks like in offers I close
Inpatient PM&R offers I close run $315K-$365K base with admission and clinic productivity overlay; medical-director roles add $30K-$60K stipend. Outpatient interventional spine and pain physiatry clears $375K-$450K with procedural-volume bonuses, and sports-medicine PM&R offers $350K-$425K depending on team-coverage and procedural mix. Pediatric rehab and brain-injury subspecialty work runs $325K-$385K in academic settings.
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation contract clauses I push back on
PM&R contracts need scrutiny on inpatient admission expectations (which can quietly become a productivity floor), procedure-mix in outpatient interventional offers (fluoroscopy versus ultrasound-guided expectations affect throughput), and team-physician coverage for sports medicine offers (which can include uncompensated weekend obligations). Restrictive covenants in interventional spine offers should be scoped to actual referral patterns.
What has shifted in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation hiring recently
Post-acute SNF medical-direction has become a real career track for physiatrists with several large platforms recruiting actively. Spinal-cord-stimulator implant and other interventional pain procedures have created procedural-volume premiums. And concussion management and return-to-play protocols for youth sports have grown sports-medicine PM&R into a distinct sub-market with younger-patient continuity care.
